Rare Earth Metals Corp
Discovers Li-Cs-Ta (LCT)–Type Rare Metal Pegmatite Field, South Bay Property,
Manitoba
December, 1st 2004:
Rare Earth Metals Corp (REM - TSX.V) is pleased to
announce the discovery of a rare metal pegmatite field on its South Bay property
located in NW Manitoba. The discovery was made during the 2004 field season by
Dr. H. Mumin P.Eng and M. Trott of Brandon University while conducting field
reconnaissance on the South Bay Ni-Cu-Co PGE property. The South Bay property is
located approximately 60 km northeast of the mining community of Leaf Rapids,
Manitoba, and is accessible by an all weather road.
The rare metal pegmatites show evidence of lithium cesium tantalum (Li-Cs-Ta)
subtype zoning and are well exposed along the South Indian Lake road over a
distance of 5–6 km. Preliminary assays returned values of up to 435 ppm tantalum
from a grab sample of quartz-albite and black-oxide–bearing pegmatite. Grab
samples of muscovite-rich material returned values up to 1.75 wt. % cesium
oxide, (CsO).
The pegmatite bodies are hosted in a large diorite intrusion and remain very
well preserved. They range from complex, zoned pegmatites locally enriched in
tantalum± beryllium ±cesium, to associated granitic pegmatites that are up to 15
m in exposed thickness. The pegmatites are well zoned with interesting
mineralogy, including K-feldspar (up to 50 cm graphic crystals), albite
(including aquamarine, saccharoidal and megacrystic varieties), compositionally
varied muscovite, quartz, beryl, tourmaline, garnet, sulphides, apatite,
triphylite and various unidentified oxides.
It is now recognized that both the South Bay Property and the U-REE Carbonantite
Complex on the company’s Eden Lake, Manitoba property lie along a major
structural corridor that is prospective for several types of polymetallic
mineralization. Further information and photographs of the rare metal pegmatites
and a description of the structural corridor and polymetallic mineral belt that
underlies the South Bay and Eden Lake properties is presented in a report by
Mumin and Corriveau, published in the Manitoba Geological Survey Report of
Activities 2004. To view the report electronically, go to: (http://www.remcorp.info/GS-07Eden.pdf)
Rare Earth Metals President and CEO, John Roozendaal says “this discovery is
further evidence of the prospective nature of our Manitoba properties. The
diverse geology of the South Bay property which now hosts both a high grade
Ni-Cu-Co PGE occurrence and a rare metal pegmatite field, is of great interest
to the Company and further field reconnaissance will be a strong component of
our 2005 exploration program.”
